David Abbey Paige, a New York City artist, accompanied Richard Byrd's second expedition to Antarctica from 1933-35. Paige's purpose was to visually record the spectacular effects of the Antarctic sky and the dazzling colors of high latitudes. Byrd asked Paige once if he would paint a particularly dramatic twilight scene. Paige responded, "I could paint it, alright, but what's the use? Nobody would believe it. Whoever saw a sky like that? How can you describe a sea that's like no sea ever was or will be again? ... How can you describe a sky that's so china-like that a single sharp sound might shatter it?" Throughout the expedition, Paige completed 100 pastels of various sizes and about 300 pencil drawings of Aurora Australis, the southern polar lights.
PEM's exhibition, To the Ends of the Earth: Painting the Polar Landscape presents more than 50 paintings, sketches and photography by artists who journeyed to the Arctic and Antarctic during the 18th to mid-20th centuries. Paige's breathtaking "Red Sky" is one of the works featured.
