| This famous image of the schooner yacht America was based on a popular print of the day. Fitz Henry Lane, a prominent American landscape painter who specialized in marine views, took great care to give a crisp and colorful view of the America on a momentous occasion. In 1851, America won the first international race at Cowes, a great shock to English yachting society. Ever since, this series of international races has been known as the America's Cup.
