The Lost Words

Written by Robert Macfarlane, Illustrated by Jackie Morris

When the most recent edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary was published there were almost forty common words concerning nature that had been dropped.  Acorn, adder, bluebell, dandelion, fern, heron, kingfisher, newt, otter and willow were replaced with attachment, blog, broadband, bullet-point, cut-and-paste and voice-mail.

Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris set out to help bridge the growing gulf between childhood and the natural world.  The author and illustrator created a “spell book” that conjures back twenty of these lost words through the magic of word and paint.

This beautifully illustrated book celebrates the wonder and importance of everyday nature by keeping these words alive in the voices, stories and dreams of children and adults alike.

The Lost Words has created a grassroots movement to re-wild childhood across Britain, Europe and North America.
