Black and gold lacquered table with a view of Macao and the Praya Grande on the inside of the lid. Commissioned by the Wetmore family of Newport, Rhode Island. Likely installed in the family's 1852 mansion Chateau-sur-mer.
From Crosman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade: "The inside lid of the table is decorated with a view of the Praya Grande at Macao. One piece from an elaborate suite of lacquered furniture made for William Wetmore, it is initialled 'W' on the lid." (269)
"An ornate suite of lacquered furniture made for the Wetmore family of Newport, Rhode Island, a family very heavily involved in the China trade, illustrates the various forms of furniture in a large western order of the second quarter of the 19th century. The suite consists of a bonheur de jour of fine proportions and style, a sewing (or work) table complete with its ivory fittings, three nests of small tables made up of four tables to each nest, a large round centre table and a cigar humidor. A number of lacquered boxes for miscellaneous purposes complete the suite. All the furniture is completely covered with intricate Chinese scenes and designs which work together to make an extremely pleasing overall effect. Each of the objects has a script 'W' in a circle in gold on the front or top. The most unusual individual piece in the set is the work table. Painted in gold inside the lid is a view of the Praya Grande at Macao, in much the same compositional arrangement as an oil on canvas or watercolour picture of the same period. The view is extremely accurate in its depiction of public buildings, residences and churches at Macao in the second quarter of the 19th century." (273)
