Grand Tour Gold Plated Earrings

Many of the earliest additions to PEM’s American decorative arts were exquisite objects acquired by wealthy and well-traveled New Englanders on their “grand tour” of Europe. In the18th century, this extended cultural sojourn to Europe was part of a wealthy British nobleman’s education. Soon it became common for upper class American men and women to make the journey as well.

This elongated crescent or boat-shaped earring is a timeless Mediterranean style that can be found as early as 2500 BC. It is typical of the adornments that many young American women brought home from their tour.
