Bring a piece of Salem home with you! Ships at Sea plates are a Salem twist on traditional blue & white bone china. This beautiful set of four plates is the perfect gift for any occasion. Featuring the "Monk" and the "Essex" ships.
The bone china plates in the "Ships at Sea" series are based on prints of sailing vessels that plied the seas to and from America around the globe in days long gone by.
The original prints are in the Peabody Essex Museum which was founded in 1799 by a group of captains and their supercargoes who lived in the Essex, Massachusetts area. The adventurous seafarers traveled around the world, assembling a large and unusual group of objects, which forms the basis of the museum.
The flags on the rims are emblems of the twelve great shipping houses of the Essex area; additional roundels symbolize the compasses and anchors so critical to the sailing life.
